Relationship health depends on how well each partner’s needs are being met…
Relationship & Marriage Counselling Cairns - Process & Pricing
We are excited to be confirmed as the 2024 Best Marriage & Relationship Counsellor in Cairns. Click here for further information.
Please see below for the marriage and relationship counselling process here at Northern Frontiers. Unlike other providers, we offer FREE confidential 5-10min individual Intake phone calls with our Counsellor prior to any joint session. We recognise it is very important to quickly build a rapport with your Counsellor, particularly given the often difficult discussions that need to be held.
Northern Frontiers provides affordable marriage counselling and relationship counselling services from our Cairns office. We understand that it can often be hard to admit a relationship / marriage is in trouble – and to pinpoint why. Amidst all the hurt, anger, and frustration, it’s not easy to stop and listen quietly to each other’s concerns and viewpoints. If we hear something we don’t like we tend to stop listening and start building a counter/defensive response. Then we fire it back causing conflict to escalate. If this happens again and again resentment grows…and love fades…
A common mistake many couples make is waiting too long before seeking professional relationship counselling or marriage counselling help when things go wrong. Sitting back hoping things will simply fix themselves runs the risk of one, or both, partners leaving the relationship for good.

Our practitioners at Northern Frontiers Relationship Counselling & Marriage Counselling Cairns have extensive experience across a broad range of life issues. Relationship counselling can assist couples in dealing with a variety of marriage and relationship issues. Partners are invited to consider what they need from each other to be content in the relationship and how to ask for it.
When our needs are met, we feel content and more inclined to want to please our partner by meeting their needs. Living too long with unmet needs, however, causes us to experience a range of powerfully unpleasant emotions that eventually force us to consider going outside the relationship to get our needs met.
Listening for understanding is the key to improved communication…
Northern Frontiers Relationship & Marriage Counselling Cairns believes an essential part of relationship repair work is learning to how to actively listen for understanding. Most of us tend to assume we know what our partner needs. Unless you’ve actually sat down and asked your partner what they need from you and taken the time to listen carefully, you’re probably just making assumptions and acting on them.
What is the process for repair work?
To begin the relationship repair work process at Northern Frontiers Relationship & Marriage Counselling Cairns, a counsellor must speak privately with each partner. This is called an Intake and Assessment session.
IMPORTANT: Throughout the Intake and Assessment session the counsellor will assess whether it is appropriate to offer a joint session. Northern Frontiers Counselling Cairns does not offer joint sessions under the following circumstances:
1. There are indicators of significant historical or current intimate partner violence.
2. One or both partners demonstrate unwillingness/inability to explore their own behaviours and ways in which they may be impacting negatively on the relationship. Repair work requires commitment from both partners to increase self-awareness and modify/eliminate damaging behaviours.
3. When one party has decided to end the relationship and is therefore not motivated towards repairing the relationship. It is not the responsibility of the Counsellor to inform one party the relationship is over.
Intake and Assessment sessions are charged at the below rates. Couples can choose different options if they wish, and depends on how long you would like to speak with the Counsellor prior to a joint session – session length must be pre-booked/advised:
- FREE 5-10min individual Intake & Assessment session phone call.
- 30-minute individual Intake & Assessment session phone call. Cost is $84.00 per person.
- 50-minute individual Intake & Assessment session phone call or office session. Cost is $140.00 per person.
-
- Note: Both partners do not need to choose the same Intake option. It depends on what both are comfortable with. A joint 50 minute session must be booked at same time as confirming the Intake sessions.
- Referral service: Northern Frontiers Counselling Cairns offers a referral service if/when joint sessions are assessed as not appropriate. Pricing and Terms & Conditions will then be set by the referral provider.
- The cost of a 50-minute joint Relationship Counselling session is $150.00.

What are our emotional needs?
Human emotional needs, such as Affection, Openness and Honesty, Sexual Fulfilment and so on…are our basic psychological driving forces. They may change throughout our life span, but they don’t change overnight – and they always demand to be met to our individual satisfaction. At Northern Frontiers Counselling Cairns our Relationship Counsellor will assist you in asking respectfully for what you need from each other. Understanding and meeting each other’s needs is a vital part of relationship repair work.
The process is as follows:
Intake & Assessment with Partner 1
5 – 10 minute phone session: FREE, OR
30-minute phone session: $84.00, OR
50-minute office or phone session: $140.00
Intake & Assessment with Partner 2
5 – 10 minute phone session: FREE, OR
30-minute phone session: $84.00, OR
50-minute office or phone session: $140.00
Joint Relationship Counselling Session
50-minute session (phone, videochat or office) – $150.00
IMPORTANT:
Want to Achieve Best Results? – It is important to note that both partners must be willing to commit to repairing the relationship for there to be any chance of success. If one party is not committed to the relationship it is not the responsibility of the Counsellor to encourage them to remain in the relationship. If the Counsellor does not believe this critical point is understood by both parties, then a referral to another service provider may be made.
Relationship Counselling can only involve joint sessions when both partners feel comfortable speaking openly and honestly in each other’s presence and the counsellor assesses it as appropriate. Prior to a joint session a Counsellor must speak privately with each partner for a minimum 15-minute Intake & Assessment phone call. This is your opportunity to provide background information and outline the issues you wish to discuss.
Joint sessions can be conducted in-person at our Cairns North office or via phone/video-chat (Zoom, FaceTime, MS Teams etc). Either partner may request a 50-minute individual session (fee is $140.00) at any stage of the relationship counselling process. This allows you to fully explore the issues prior to a joint/face-to-face session with your partner.
