Individual, private and affordable Parenting After Separation Program

Parenting After Separation Program

Question: Why should I do this program?

Children don’t need perfect parents – but they do need safe parents.  As parents our job is to protect children from any form of harm or abuse – even when it may be unintentional. Children have a right to feel safe and loved. They also need to understand that actions have consequences. Sometimes we may mean well, but our teaching methods can be harmful.  Feeling overwhelmed, angry and frustrated comes with the parenting territory, and is usually heightened by family separation.  It helps if you can remain calm, respond instead of react, and model appropriate emotional self-regulation for your children and their other parent.  Additionally, as you will be required to co-parent until your children are in their late teens, learning how to parent effectively with your ex is crucial for the well-being of all concerned.

There’s no shame in asking for help. Parenting is hard work and it doesn’t come with a handbook.  The Northern Frontiers Parenting After Separation Awareness Program helps you keep your children feeling safe as they move through family separation. When children are not living in conflict or fear, they thrive. Thriving children can focus on skill development that will help them reach their full potential.  Children who are distracted by family conflict and fear develop behaviours that may help them survive their childhood experience however, the closer they get to adulthood, the more problematic and unacceptable those behaviours become…

Question: What does the program cover?

The Parenting After Separation Awareness Program is delivered one-on-one with an experienced Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner, who is accredited with the Attorney-General’s Department, Canberra. This means you are assured of customised parenting support, and it begins with an assessment of your current life situation and parental practices. The initial assessment identifies areas of need and determines content best suited to your family circumstances. The focus of the program is to support you in caring for your child/ren in ways that promote positive developmental outcomes and enhance parent-child and parent-parent relationships. Key components typically include early childhood needs (including infancy), child behaviours and development; child emotional well-being and mental health; parental stressors and practices, co-parenting verses parallel parenting after separation practices and parent-child/parent-parent relationships.

Question: Will the program help with a Family Law or Criminal Law matter?

Yes, participation in the Parenting After Separation program demonstrates a person’s willingness to ‘hold the mirror to their own behaviour and make positive changes if/as required.  Upon request you will be issued a Letter of Completion that can be used for family law or criminal law purposes.  The document will include details of your participation in the program and a list of therapeutic components covered.  It may also include details of any ongoing referrals made.
