Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Program

Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Program

Concerned about behaviours that may be affecting the safety of your relationships or family?

Northern Frontiers provides an individual and confidential Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Program designed to increase awareness of behaviours that can cause fear, harm or control within intimate and family relationships.

The program is educational and behaviour-focused. It provides participants with an opportunity to reflect on their own behaviour, better understand the nature and impact of domestic and family violence, identify higher-risk patterns and consider safer and more respectful ways of responding to conflict, frustration and relationship difficulties.

The program is delivered one-to-one over four individual sessions rather than in a group setting and can be tailored to the participant's circumstances.

Northern Frontiers provides the program Australia-wide by telephone and video, including FaceTime, MS Teams and Zoom.

No referral is required. Participants may self-refer or attend following a recommendation from a lawyer, Court, employer, family member or another professional.

What behaviours can domestic and family violence include?

Domestic and family violence is not limited to physical assault.

Depending on the circumstances, behaviours can include coercive or controlling behaviour, threats, intimidation, physical or sexual violence, stalking, repeated derogatory or demeaning behaviour, property damage, financial abuse, isolation from family or friends and behaviour that causes another family member to feel fearful.

The program helps participants consider how behaviours can affect partners, former partners, children, family members and other people, even where harm was not consciously intended.

What does the Domestic Violence Awareness Program cover?

The exact content can be tailored to the participant, but topics may include:

  • understanding domestic and family violence
  • coercive and controlling behaviours
  • recognising patterns of intimidation, fear and control
  • physical, emotional, psychological and financial abuse
  • the impact of family violence on partners, children and family relationships
  • personal responsibility and accountability
  • identifying triggers and higher-risk situations
  • communication and conflict behaviour
  • respecting boundaries and another person's autonomy
  • developing safer responses to anger, frustration and conflict
  • strategies for reducing the risk of harmful behaviour recurring
  • identifying when specialist or additional support may be required.

Can the program be relevant to a Family Law or Criminal Law matter?

People often undertake the Domestic Violence Awareness Program while involved in criminal, domestic violence or family law proceedings.

Upon request, Northern Frontiers can prepare a Letter of Completion after the program has been completed.

The Letter of Completion can confirm attendance, completion of the program, topics covered and relevant information about participation. It is not a psychological assessment, risk assessment, diagnosis or guarantee of any particular legal outcome.

If you are involved in legal proceedings, you should discuss with your lawyer whether completion of the program and a Letter of Completion may be relevant to your circumstances.

Program Options & Add-Ons

The Domestic Violence Awareness Program can be completed as a standalone four-session program.

Where a participant is already completing one of Northern Frontiers' other four-session behavioural awareness programs, DV Awareness may also be available as a two-session add-on.

Anger Management Program

Our Anger Management Program focuses on understanding Anger, recognising high-risk situations, improving emotional regulation and developing safer and more assertive ways of responding to frustration and conflict.

If Anger Management is your main four-session program, Domestic Violence Awareness can be completed as an additional two-session add-on where appropriate.

Parenting After Separation Awareness Program

Our Parenting After Separation Awareness Program focuses on children's needs, emotional safety, parenting stress, communication and parenting following separation.

Where appropriate, DV Awareness can also be completed as a two-session add-on when Parenting After Separation is the participant's main four-session program.

Why combine programs?

Sometimes the concerns that bring a participant to Northern Frontiers involve more than one area.

For example, a person may want to improve how they manage Anger while also developing greater awareness of domestic and family violence behaviours, relationship dynamics or the effect of parental conflict on children.

The add-on format allows these additional issues to be explored without requiring the participant to complete another full four-session program.

Going through separation?

Northern Frontiers also provides Australia-wide Parenting Mediation & Family Dispute Resolution and Property & Financial Mediation.

These mediation services are separate from the Domestic Violence Awareness Program and are subject to their own suitability and safety assessment processes.

How does the program work?

The Domestic Violence Awareness Program consists of four individual sessions of up to 50 minutes each.

The first session considers your circumstances and the reasons you are undertaking the program. Subsequent sessions build awareness of relevant behaviours, their impact on other people and practical strategies for making safer choices in the future.

Sessions can generally be completed weekly or fortnightly by telephone, FaceTime, MS Teams or Zoom.

Domestic Violence Awareness Program – Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a Men's Behaviour Change Program?

No. Northern Frontiers' Domestic Violence Awareness Program is an individual educational and behavioural awareness program.  If a Court, government agency or referring organisation has specifically directed you to complete a particular accredited or specialist behaviour-change program, you should confirm their requirements before booking.

Can I receive a Letter of Completion?

Yes. A Letter of Completion can be prepared upon request after the program has been completed.  The letter provides a concise record of attendance, completion and the program content undertaken. It may also record relevant information about participation.

The letter does not provide a clinical diagnosis, psychological assessment, specialist family violence risk assessment or opinion about the outcome of Court proceedings.  If you intend to provide the letter to a lawyer, Court, employer or another organisation, you should confirm with them that the document is suitable for the purpose for which you require it.

How much does the Domestic Violence Awareness Program cost?

The standalone Domestic Violence Awareness Program consists of four individual sessions of up to 50 minutes each.

Standard session fee: $220 per session
Four-session program: $880
Optional Letter of Completion: $150

If the full four-session program is prepaid before commencement, a 5% prepayment discount applies in accordance with our current pricing arrangements.

Where DV Awareness is completed as a two-session add-on to another Northern Frontiers behavioural awareness program, the sessions are charged at the applicable standard session rate.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can self-refer and contact Northern Frontiers directly.

We also receive enquiries and referrals from criminal and family law solicitors, barristers, employers, family members and other professionals.

Can I refer my client, employee, partner, family member or friend?

Yes. You are welcome to contact Reception for information about the program that you can provide to a prospective participant.

Participation is most useful where the person understands the nature of the program and is willing to engage with the content.

Solicitors and other professional referral sources are welcome to contact Northern Frontiers to discuss the program, current fees and the information that may be provided following completion.

How quickly can I start?

No referral is required and appointments can generally be arranged promptly, often within a week of your initial enquiry.

The program is available Australia-wide by telephone, FaceTime, MS Teams or Zoom.

You will work directly with your facilitator rather than attending a group program.

What if I live remotely or regionally?

That is not a problem.

The Domestic Violence Awareness Program is available Australia-wide, so participants can attend from home, work or another appropriate private location without travelling to an office.
